Scoliosis: Bent, Not Broken

Chiropractic

What do you think of when you hear the term scoliosis?

You may already know that scoliosis is something you’re born with. But that doesn’t mean you have to wait until it gets bad enough for invasive surgery to take action. Because being bent doesn’t mean you’re broken.

Read on for an overview of scoliosis and preventative measures you can take today to keep your child’s spine healthy.

What is scoliosis?

Watch this video as Dr. Aaron Collins breaks down scoliosis.

Who gets scoliosis?

Scoliosis usually begins around adolescence. Today, it’s getting so bad for some kids between 11 and 17 years old that they need surgical rods in their spine to help hold it straight.

This is a hugely invasive surgery with the goal of getting organs back to the point where they’re no longer compromised. However, at the point surgery is needed, it’s unlikely the spine will ever be corrected to zero.

Are there any health issues?

When scoliosis is left untreated, it can become quite bad over time. Discs located between each vertebrae are made to fit perfectly within their space. But when they are compressed, so are the nerve roots coming from either side of the discs. This limits your brain’s ability to talk to other parts of your body, like the liver, pancreas, kidneys and other vital organs.

When the nerve roots get pressed too hard, they can’t function anymore and they start to pull. This decreases the amount of communication you get from your brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body. In scoliosis cases, the curvature can cause the heart, lungs and other vital organs become compressed. This can lead to stomach issues, breathing issues, sleeping issues and more health problems – all things that can be helped when you change the scoliosis early on.

Is there an alternative to surgery?

Yes! You don’t have to sit idly by and watch as scoliosis worsens. There are things you can do to correct the curvature without the drastic measures of having to put metal rods in there to help straighten it or keep it from progressing.

Just because you’re bent, it doesn’t meant that you’re broken. At Collins Chiropractic, we treat patients using gentle traction therapy that works to slowly correct the curvature of your spine. We’ve seen scoliosis change and improvement for our patients when it’s treated in time. Remember, the earlier you catch it, the easier it is to influence scoliosis in a positive direction.
